I feel like I havent learnt very much in my Creative Writing elective, almost everything is similar to when I had E-Lit classes, which I loved so much, probably because the teachers were amazing. But today I listened to a lecture on poetry, which I really don't enjoy very much because I'm lazy and it takes time to dissect a poem and understand it. It takes even longer to try and write one or a song (lyrics) It's so impossibly hard because as a writer you're never satisfied with what you write. BUT, this couple of quotes from Billy Collins are really insightful and might just change the way I write:
Read as many poets as you can until you find one (or more) who makes you jealous. Then try to imitate
his or her voice. One of the paradoxes of the writing life is that the only way to originality is
through imitation. If you don't imitate others, you will sound clichéd and flat. You will find your voice
by trying on the voices of others.
