So when I first registered for Visual Communication and read the Unit Outline and saw the Assessment details in week 1, my first thoughts were ... Oh I'm screwed... I can't draw.. I don't know photoshop. Invent? INVENT? Invent what? How will I think of something? A logo? How do I create something as cool as FedEx or GE or Carrefour, they have such smart logos. how how how?
After about two weeks of panicking, I did finally think of an invention. Let's begin with week 1 tutorial, was unfortunately sick that entire week. The first tutorial activity was each person in the tute introducing themselves, what they study and the moment in life where they felt most free. And everyone else was supposed to sketch a symbol for that person in 10seconds. There was no pause between each person so I had to draw soooo fast but I went home and redrew what was in my head just because ... I wanted to :D
"RecaLL" such a lame name, I know, is the name of my device. Inspired by the movie Pacific Rim where Mako had her flashback and Raleigh was able to 'walk-through' her memory and experience the event himself, I thought of inventing a headgear that enabled one to share their thoughts, images and memories.
Initially I also thought of Freaky Friday and I would create a pair of devices for two people to connect and share, but I thought why not just connect it to a screen and everyone around can experience it too.
The purpose of this device however is not for common-use and is strictly medical use only. It will not be designed for daily use nor will it be affordable as I imagine it would be very draining on a person to use this device.
The device is for victims or patients who are in shock or have experienced horrifying events that they cannot describe and this helps doctors or police to understand the situation. It will also be for interrogation where criminals wear it and after enough probing, surely they will have images of their plots and secrets flashing in their minds.
It can also be used to aid Alzheimer patients, where the family members and friends and take turns to project their memories with the patient so the patient might be able to remember and rediscover themselves.
So this activity was to think of key words to describe the device and further break-down those words
In Week 2 we were given a series of exercises to do in class. 1. Choose from a list of words on the board and create a colour swatch of the word with colours you think represent the word. (I don't think I did it very well..)
2. Draw a shape to describe following words and 3. Use lines to represent words, bold, thin, curved, dotted etc.
4. Draw out how you think a word looks like physically.
5. We were given a series of photos to look at and told to reverse the exercises we had done. So I chose the picture were there was a dog sitting on a pile of about 20cushions all stacked in one column, so the words I chose to represent that picture was "Balanced", "Wasteful" and "Pampered"
Thus a pyramid, because pyramid is a stable shape and the Triangle is a very strong stable shape. I also decided on the RedGreenBlue combination as they were the three basic colours and this all represents balance, of course my final design does not display wastefulness or pampering but .. ohwell
Also in week 2, we played around with Illustrator and made a fascist logo
Week 3's tutorial was cancelled due to the Ekka Holiday but I was told to do some sketches, so I found a few images to help me with my sketching, mainly power cables, LED lights and adjustable buckles as my headgear would have to be adjustable, flexible and had lights as some sort of indicator. The cable obviously for power and connection to a screen.
So the front of my headgear has a screen, for some.. patient status, LED lights no real idea why but machines always have lights, and the cable is attached at the back with a buckle for adjusting the size and fit of the headgear..
Next was to design a logo, I just googled Brain and found the following
Thus RecaLL has a rough design like that
I initially put the Brain in the R and the a was a gear and the LLs were lifelines, I think it looks too complicated so I thought I'd remove the gear from a, I might put the gears into the Brain part of R. I imagine the R would be light pink and the lifelines would be red and the rest just simple black alphabets.
